JavaScriptLA Day at the Beach

Hey Volunteers!

It’s time to get together and have a little fun before summer officially kicks off!

Let’s meet up for a day at the beach!

Sunday, May 19

1pm – 5pm

Bolsa Chica State Beach

Pacific Coast Hwy

Huntington Beach, California 92648

We can all meet by the Bolsa Chica Tower 17 for a casual day of hanging out, playing some volleyball and/or frisbee, maybe even building some sandcastles. You can bring your drinks and snacks to share or we can eat somewhere if people are interested enough (maybe tacos by the beach). Plan to possibly get wet, so definitely bring a change of clothes and some sunblock/sun-tan lotion if you plan to soak in some Vitamin D.  Feel free to bring any friends and family who are interested in coding and maybe want to be future volunteers.

Why are we doing this?

I think it’s great to chat online, but sometimes the best ideas come from face-to-face conversations, especially after you’ve run around a bit and amped up your blood flow. In this age of social media, we tend to isolate ourselves from others hiding behind computer screens. What tends to happen is “tunnel vision”. But the world isn’t all digital, so let’s share some perspectives and hack each other’s minds for a while at the beach. New perspectives will help us all have more ideas bubble in our heads — ultimately how we can help each other make this group a total win-win community for ourselves and each other.

Here are some items we can discuss at the beach:

– Tell us about yourself!

– What are your interests, your passions beyond just coding?

– What music are you into?  What foods / drinks do you love?

– Are you on social media?  Do you have an Insta/Twitter/Yelp (some other account)?  Do you blog/video/livestream?

– Why did you get into coding?  What was the reason for wanting to learn?

– What do you hope to achieve with your coding knowledge once you perfect it?

– How do you think JavaScript / or any other programming language will help transform your career?

– Where do you want to be in 5 years? 10 years?

We’ll also talk about the following:

– Future talks at JavaScriptLA

– What you’d like to do with the group (maybe give a talk? blog? film/video/edit, etc)

– Any ideas you want to share

Even if you don’t have the answers immediately when we start, that’s okay, we’ll have lots of time throughout the day and you can even write us later if you feel this event motivated you in any way! The day will be about fun and then later a gather-around where we can talk more intimately while listening to music or roasting marshmallows. You can come whenever and stay as long as you want. Be sure to let us know how we can connect with you later if you haven’t already done so.

If you can’t make the meet, that’s okay – we’ll probably have more days we hang out throughout the year. I want to make this an ongoing thing; the culture I want to build with this group is one of being able to network easily with anyone, propose cool ideas, become smarter together and just have fun without being afraid or nervous. I should also mention that I expect all of you to observe our Code of Conduct, and that at a very base level is to respect each other. We are here to have fun, but fun does not equate to harassment or unwarranted advances of any kind. If anyone is uncomfortable, you always have my ear.

Hope everyone is on board and excited with our first meet, I hope we have great turnout and look forward to meeting each and every one of you. Any questions feel free to email me back here or chat via Discord. Thanks for being a part of our JavaScriptLA volunteer community. We appreciate you!

Talk soon,
